Guelaguetza: Los Lunes del Cerro

Guelaguetza is a one of the largest and significant annual festival in Mexico. During pre Hispanic times, Guelaguetza was offered to the Gods, more specifically to Centeotl, the Goddess of Corn, in hopes of a bountiful harvest. When Spaniards arrived, they change the temple of Centeotl to Catholic Church and introduced a series of practices every Monday of July to give honor to Virgen del Carmen. That's why the festival is also called Los Lunes del Cerro, meaning the ‘Mondays of the Hill’. Today, Guelaguetza  is a celebration known for its colorful parades, traditional dancing, walking bands, and of course, spicy Hot Mexican food and refreshing margaritas.
