As the –ber months continue to get cooler, what comfort food do we usually crave for? Isn’t it a steaming bowl of beef bones and vegetables we call BULALO!
SM Hypermarket Batangas held the Bulalo Supersized Cook-off to bring together several Bulalo Cooks and serve up the largest amount of the delicious soup in one area at one time. Aside from setting a super-sized record for the city of Batangas, SM Hypermarket aims to showcase the different varieties of Bulalo and to find the best tasting one.
After a stomach filled lunch at Taste Asia, located at the heart of Mall of Asia, Bloggers and SM Hypermarket team travel all the way to Batangas City to witness another Cook-off, this time an all-time Filipino favorite dish called BULALO. Batangas has been known with its most delectable and flavorful Bulalo recipe because of the province quality of cattle.
The event started around 4pm, we were welcome by the Assistant Officer In Charge of SM Hypermarket, Batangas Mr. Jun Lozada. Panel of Judges includes Chef Aries Cueto, Jun-Jun Borlan Jr and Mr. Jun Lozada of SM Hypermarket. Present at the event are DTI Representatives too.
The Ten ( 10 ) teams ready for the battle:
- Ginazel Catering
- Siemen’s Catering
- Madelyn Dela Pena Lutong Bahay
- Hot & Cold Café
- Place of Mine Catering
- Karlo’s Place
- Tapa Kaldereta Atbp
- Restaurant El Torro
- Le Elegancia
- Joel Arceo
I must say, it was a feast of Bulalo and I was astonished to see an array of Bulalo from the people of Batangas. Using different ingredients cook in a unique way, some added pasta while a Kaldereta style Bulalo prepared by Karlo’s place and another one that looks like Tapa made by Tapa Kaldereta atbp. group – interesting Bulalo recipes!
My personal favorite was the Elegancia’s version of Bulalo though I also like the one cooked by the mothers of Lutong Bahay Atbp, I find Le Elegancia’s soup very flavorful and delicious. From many Bulalo versions, I still love the traditional and original Bulalo recipe with delicious hot soup and vegetables.
At the end of the day, there will only be two winners; The Best Tasting and The Most Number of Bowls Served Category, each winner received P25,000 worth of SM Gift Certificates and a plaque of recognition from SM Hypermarket.
Around 8pm, the winners were announced. Madelyn Dela Pena’s Lutong Bahay won the “Most Number of Bowls Served Category” with 165 serving. Le Elegancia team won the “The Best Tasting Category.” Each group were required to provide at least 50 servings weighing 100 grams each.
This is the second of SM Hypermarket’s Supersized Challenges. The previous cook-off was held in Pampanga (click here and read my post), and served up a whopping 1,775 plates of sisig. Simultaneously with Bulalo Cook-off was the Iloilo’s Batchoy Challenge.
Here’s something to watch out, happening on November 18 at the Queen City of South, Cebu’s Bibingka Challenge. How I wish I could go to Cebu and witness this exciting event, I’m sure there will be varieties of Bibingka with different flavors and toppings. Let’s find out who will serve the Best Tasting Bibingka and who can beat the 1,775 plates of sisig.
Congratulations to SM Hypermarket for the success of SM Hypermarket Master Chefs together with the Cooking Marathon and Kitchen Makeovers. Special thanks to Ms. Frances Crisol, SM Hypermarket’s Marketing Communication Group and Jonel Uy of NomNomClub.
