Hong Kong Day 2: Heritage 1881, Peak Tram, Sky Terrace, Peak Tower

I’ve been wanting to write about our Hong Kong honeymoon trip last February but I was busy moving to our new house, arranging, decorating and preparing a simple Christian housewarming ceremony. Anyway, here’s Part II of Hong Kong Honeymoon series blog.

I wake him up at 7am so we can go to different scenic spots in Central Hong Kong. Breakfast was light cereals and bread which we bought last night on a nearby bakery. I was excited to explore the city once again, more eager and energetic because I’m with my husband, a first time visitor in Hong Kong. Aside from sightseeing, were planning to buy souvenir items today. Of course, I’m looking forward to have a new pair of shoes and bag. Perhaps, a piece of home décor for our new house. First on our list is the Victoria Harbour View which we wanted to see both day and night.

Here are the highlights of our second day in Hong Kong:
  • Star Ferry Ride to HK Island
  • A short trip at the Heritage 1881
  • The Peak Tram
  • Sky Terrace 428
  • The Peak Tower Tour
  • The Avenue of Stars

Heritage 1881

Address:
2A Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon

How To Get To 1881:
MTR Tsim Sha Tsui Station Exit E, walk towards Salisbury Road, turn right, take subway (pedestrian tunnel) next to YMCA to 1881 Heritage

I really don’t know how we arrived in the Heritage 1881. It wasn’t included in the plan. Anyway, the Heritage 1881 is a former Hong Kong Marine Police headquarters preserved and restored and now houses several shopping stores, restaurants and exhibition hall. The building and its structure will transport you to the Victorian-era Hong Kong. There are monuments within the building one of the interesting spot is the Time Ball Tower.

The Heritage 1881 is simply gorgeous and high-end. You can find expensive jewelries. I don’t know if the decoration is just for that season, there were giant teddy bears at the fountain area and small ones all over the building.

Near The Train Stations

Hong Kong is a busy city indeed; people going to work while the two of us. Perhaps some of us were excited, trying to accommodate all attractions in Hong Kong for our 4 days stay. There were stores that opens as early as 8 a.m. We visited shops that sells digital cameras, mobile phones and other gadgets. Jonel even asked me for a photo souvenir with the android sign on one of the gadget stores we passed by.

We finally reach Victoria Harbour for our Victoria Peak Hong Kong Tour which included in our DIY itinerary. We were a bit surprised to see a lot of tourists in the area which we did not notice on day 1 along Nathan road. Well, I was then reminded it’s week-long Chinese New Year celebration where most are off for a holiday vacation.

We took the Star Ferry heading Hong Kong Island from Kowloon and finding our way to the Peak Tram.

Day 2 in Hong Kong

If I’m not mistaken it took us about 15 minutes to reach the island. There were lots of visitors, mostly of different nationalities such as the couple besides me and the elder at the back.

Day 2 in Hong Kong

Jonel told me it will be a long walk going to the Peak Tram. We passed by St. John’s Cathedral, a Court of Final Appeal, Hong Kong Park and HK zoological and Botanical garden before we reach the PEAK Tram terminal.

It was Ash Wednesday and we met hundreds of OFWs who just attended a mass. It’s one of the reasons why I love Hong Kong, I met a lot of our "kababayans" along the way. The city so busy that you won’t feel bored. Although there are special occasions in my life that happened in Singapore, it’s where J had his wedding proposal on my birthday but Hong Kong remains my favorite getaway. It was in 2007 when I first came here and I really had a great time even without detailed itinerary, without digital camera or camera phone and without companion.

Day 2 in Hong Kong: The Peak Tram

This is the view while the tram is going uphill. Remember to sit on the right side of the tram to enjoy the view. It’s the one with the three (3) seats just be careful and expect that you will be bumped or pushed especially during peak season where a huge number of visitors come.

Sky Terrace 428

Oh by the way, we spent about 1 1/2 hours queuing before we finally had our tickets or Peak Tram Sky Pass and another 30 minutes before our turn to ride. Anyway, it’s worth the wait and effort. We had an ultimate The Peak Experience!

Here’s a short video

Sky Terrace 428

The Peak Tower

What you will experience riding the Peak Tram? Well, you will enjoy a great panoramic view, the highest 360 degree viewing terrace in Hong Kong from Sky Terrace 428; you’ll enjoy the ride going up and down the hill which lasted about less than 20 minutes and you’ll be at The Peak Tower which is considered one of the iconic landmarks in Hong Kong.

The Peak Tower

Inside The Peak Tower are shopping centers, souvenir shops and restaurants. There’s a street market style and traditional Chinese products stores for your souvenir and even gadget needs. I bought 2 pair of shoes in one of the stores at the Peak Tower, less that $70 each.

Restaurants we found are Bubba Gump Shrimp Co Restaurant, Tien Yi Chinese Restaurant, Kyo Hachi Japanese Restaurant, Pearl on the Peak. For those on a budget or just wanted light snack, perhaps looking for familiar food there’s Burger King, Pacific Coffee, Jungle Juice serving healthy drinks and Hong Kong Day offering classic HK classic dishes from coffee, milk tea, noodles and sandwiches. There’s Starbucks too!

Before we reach the famous Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, we saw this store, the Wax Hand Union. We thought of having one as a souvenir but there was a long line of customers waiting and besides I find it expensive so we just observed what they do.

The Wishing Corner and “I Love You at The Peak” plus the cool breeze at the terrace set a romantic ambiance perfect for couples especially for the newly weds. We expressed our love on a wishing card hanging on a giant heart at the Sky Terrace 428. Then, we had several photos taken to capture this beautiful moment.

We had a wonderful day at The Peak Top of Hong Kong and experience Sky Terrace 428, Shop and dine at The Peak Tower and rode The Peak Tram.

Watch out for Part 3 of our Hong Kong trip.
