Efforts to Make the Philippines More PWD-friendly Tourist Destination

Last November, my mom-in-law and I enjoyed quality time together when we traveled to Singapore for a short vacation. She don't look like a senior citizen. I was surprised that she don't even get tired after long walks. Sometimes, she would take advantage using facilities intended for senior citizens and PWD.

DOT Working to Make Philippines More PWD-friendly Tourist Destination

Here in the Philippines, the Department of Tourism (DOT) is working for an accessible tourism industry by training tourist guides for persons with disability (PWD).

In Bohol, we saw the side rails going up to the Chocolate Hills viewing deck. The side rails are perfect especially for older and PWD tourists. Most restrooms have separate rooms dedicated for senior citizens.

During the ASEAN-Japan Accessible tourism seminar a few weeks ago, Tourism Undersecretary Benito Bengzon Jr. said the DOT, through its manpower and development office, began training the first batch of PWD-friendly tour guides in Pampanga.

In addition, the DOT is conducting seminars every year on how to handle PWD tourists across the country. They recently partnered with the the ASEAN-Japan Center and the National Council on Disability Affairs for the ASEAN-Japan Accessible tourism seminar held last month.

The purpose of UN convention on right of persons with disability is to defend, protect, and reinforce the rights of PWDs. The Department of Tourism is closely observing this as well the emphasis of the ASEAN on universally accessible tourism. Accessibility is one of the categories included in the DOT’s accreditation standards.
“The Philippines is trying its best to be a PWD-friendly destination as we strive for a more competitive and sustainable industry,” Bengzon said.

With more PWD-friendly tourist destination and improved facilities for seniors and PWD, we are attracting tourists to visit the Philippines.
